Reopening and Recovery

Governor Newsom announced this week that California plans to end its use of the colored tier system for counties under the Blueprint for a Safer Economy on June 15 so long as there is a steady supply of COVID-19 vaccines and low COVID-19 hospitalizations. This would effectively open up California’s economy in time for summer. California continues to see a steady improvement in COVID numbers, including the lowest positivity rate in the nation and over 21 million doses of vaccine administered. If the state stays on track, a recent UCLA forecast shows that California’s economy is positioned to recover faster from the pandemic than the rest of the nation. Wildfire Preparation

On the heels of an especially dry winter, Governor Newsom and legislative leaders announced a $536 million wildfire preparation package. The package includes funding for 1,400 additional firefighters, vegetation management, fire prevention grants, home hardening, and more. The Legislature is set to send SB 85 and AB 79 to the Governor’s desk early next week, with the Governor poised to sign them into law soon after. Additional details on the package can be found here.

Almost Time to Get the Kids Out of the House

Entertainment venues Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure theme parks have begun selling tickets ahead of their scheduled April 30 reopening. After a year of being closed, the parks will reopen with limited hours and attractions and other precautions to prevent virus exposure.

Assemblymember-Elect Weber

Dr. Akilah Weber has secured 51.9% of the vote in the special election to fill the vacant seat in Assembly District 79, enough to avoid a run-off election. Dr. Weber is the daughter of Dr. Shirley Weber who vacated the seat when Governor Newsom appointed her to be California’s Secretary of State. Dr. Akilah Weber is an obstetrician/gynecologist, and is the founder and director of the Pediatric & Adolescent Gynecology Division at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego. Dr. Weber will be sworn into the Assembly in the coming weeks.
