Hedging Your Bet

Discussions about the future of online sports betting are heating up as multiple state ballot initiatives are being circulated by competing interests. The entities seeking to place an initiative on the November 2022 ballot are California Tribes, the cardroom industry and out-of-state gaming corporations including DraftKings and FanDuel. While the details of each proposed initiative differ, the end goal is the same — to legalize sports wagering in California. Gaming in California has historically been an exclusive right granted to California Native American Tribes, which in turn provide economic and social benefits to their members, surrounding communities, and to the state.

What’s the Hold Up?

The Senate and Assembly Select Committees on Ports and Goods Movement held a joint informational hearing this week on the supply chain crisis, particularly at the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports. The committees heard from representatives from the port authorities, the California State Transportation Agency, the Governor’s Office of Business Development, labor and industry. Experts said the congestion is being caused by a perfect storm of conditions – a shortage of truck drivers, critical vehicle parts, storage warehouse space and more. Lawmakers discussed short term and long term solutions to dealing with the crisis, which included identifying additional storage space for containers, investments in the workforce, electrification of the ports, revisiting state/local warehouse regulations, and continuous funding to support ports.

California to Glasgow

The COP26 conference on climate change is currently underway in Glasgow, Scotland. Lt. Governor Eleni Kounalakis led the California delegation, which included the California Environmental Protection Agency Secretary, Natural Resources Agency Secretary, Food and Agriculture Secretary, California Air Resources Board Chair, California Energy Commission Chair, and a group of state lawmakers. Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon announced he will lead an Assembly delegation as well. One noteworthy event California has taken part in is the signing of the Edinburgh Declaration, making California the first U.S. state to join a global network of governments dedicated to protecting nature and biodiversity.

Warning Sign for Democrats

Eyes were on the East Coast as voters in Virginia and New Jersey went to the polls Tuesday. In Virginia, former Democratic Governor Terry McAuliffe lost the gubernatorial race to Republican Glenn Younkin. And New Jersey experienced an unexpectedly close race where incumbent Democratic Governor Philip Murphy was narrowly re-elected over Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli. These races were considered to be an indicator for how Democrats will perform in the upcoming 2022 midterm elections. After Tuesday’s results, many political pundits now believe the Democrats are in serious danger of losing control of Congress in 2022. The nationwide redistricting efforts that are currently underway will also play a significant role in the midterm elections.
