Since March 2004, the ACOEM guidelines have been rebuttably presumed correct in the treatment of injured worker patients. To assist members doctors who treat injured workers, CCA has negotiated with the publisher an exclusive discount for the ACOEM guidelines. Doctors treating injured workers will want these newly released guidelines at their fingertips for the following reasons:
-- Carriers are using the ACOEM guidelines to deny care, citing the reference either generally or a specific portion of a guideline. It is very helpful to know exactly what it says so that you can refute the care denial.
-- The guidelines are about more than how many visits injured worker patients can receive. They set out appropriate diagnostic pathways, criteria necessary to consider a specific diagnosis, as well as various treatment options. Use the wrong criteria and you may not get paid.
-- Failure to understand what the guidelines indicate is reasonable is an almost certain guarantee of not getting paid. To know in advance what is eligible to be
reimbursed, the book is needed.
-- You will need to cite alternative literature to overcome some of the biases and shortcomings of the guidelines, but you will be better served, and more likely to prevail, if you can show where the guidelines are dated, or incomplete or make faulty assumptions.
